ASSOCIATION FOR LAND REFORM AND DEVELOPMENT : ALRD is the federating body of 273 NGOs, peasants and landless organizations in Bangladesh, which are involved in the struggle to establish land rights, rights to food, rights to livelihood, and rights of the indigenous people of minorities. It is currently the main organization in Bangladesh working exclusively on land reform issues. ALRD was set up in 1991 to respond to the problem of landlessness which continues to be one of the key challenges in the country. Misuse, mismanagement and maldistribution of land are recognized as some of the fundamental causes of mass poverty. Attempts at land reform in Bangladesh have to date been on an ad hoc basis and have had little success in fundamentally altering patterns of land distribution.

MANGROVE ACTION PROJECT : MAP’s mission is partnering with mangrove forest communities, grassroots NGOs, researchers and local governments to conserve and restore mangrove forests and related coastal ecosystems, while promoting community-based, sustainable management of coastal resources.Witnessing firsthand the rapid devastation of the worlds mangrove forest wetlands and their associated coastal ecosystems, the founders of the Mangrove Action Project decided in 1992 that it was time to form a global network to save the mangroves.

MAP has grown steadily during the last 16 years to become a respected member of the global environmental movement.  MAP’s international network has grown to include over 450 NGOs and 300 scientists and academics from 60 nations.  In recent years, MAP has transformed from a network- and advocacy-focused organization into one still involved in advocacy, but with programs and activities on the ground, supported through local offices in Thailand and Indonesia, as well as a developing office in Brazil.  MAP’s pro-active five-pronged approach to long-term mangrove conservation involves:  education, advocacy, collaboration, conservation and restoration, and sustainable community-based development.
